The Chief Justice of Bangladesh has agreed to resign "in principle" after facing intense pressure from protesters around the Supreme Court, broadcaster Jamuna TV reported. Appointed to the post last year, Hasan is considered a supporter of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was given an ultimatum by protesters demanding her resignation. More than 450 people, including dozens of police, have been killed in the protests, part of the wider unrest that led to Hasina's departure. The police union further complicated the situation by going on strike and refusing to return to work until their safety was assured. Hasina, who has been living in New Delhi since Monday, plans to return to the country to contest the elections.

Dozens of homes and businesses belonging to the country's Hindu minority were destroyed this week as hundreds of people in northwestern Bangladesh tried to flee to neighboring India. Bangladesh's interim president Muhammad Yunus, at the center of mass protests that ended Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule, hugged the weeping mother of a student shot dead by police and called for religious unity. The Nobel laureate's first task was to bring stability to Bangladesh after responding to calls from student protests to temporarily take power in the country after weeks of deadly anti-government protests against the government led by Sheikh Hasina.
