DMK Chief Karunanidhi Passes Away

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi and DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) chief died on Aug 7th at 6:10 PM.

The 94-year-old Karunanidhi was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Kauvery Hospital on July 26th. The hospital in a statement said that he was brought there after his blood pressure had dropped.

Karunanidhi served as a third chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Karunanidhi, who is born on June 3, 1924, at Thirukkuvalai village in Nagapattinam district entered politics when he was 14-year-old, inspired by a speech by Alagiriswamii of the Justice Party, and participated in Anti-Hindi agitations.

He entered the Tamil Nadu assembly at the age of 33, winning the Kulithalai seat in the 1957 election. In 1961, he became the DMK treasurer and deputy leader of opposition in the state assembly in the year 1962. When the DMK came to power in 1967, he became the minister for public works.

Karunanidhi became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the year 1969 when Annadurai expired and became the first leader of DMK, since the leader post was left vacant for Periyar when Annadurai was alive.

He is likewise well-know known for his writing works in the Tamil film industry. During the Thooku Medai play, M. R. Radha gave him the title of Kalaignar.

Party cadres had poured in near the hospital complex after receiving news about Karunanidhi being admitted there. They were chanting "long live Thalaivar (leader)".

Karunanidhi, who is addressed as 'Kalaignar' (artiste) by his supporters, followers and a few fellow politicians, entered his 50th year as party chief on June 3.
