First fuel, then gas and now onion — skyrocketing rates of these daily essentials have busted the budget of many Indian homes.

In August alone, onion prices soared by one-third, the highest recorded ever! With onion rates seesawing between Rs 60-Rs 80 a kilo (almost as expensive as petrol), the “aam junta” have little option but to forego the vegetable for now.

Hoarding has triggered a 25 per cent hike in India's biggest wholesale market in Lasalgoan, Nashik, where onion is being sold at Rs 4,500 a quintal. Aridity has  further resulted in a 40 per cent decline in supply in both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, scrunching supplies further.

Market experts predict that onion prices aren't likely to plummet before September. The drop in price can only be expected after the new crop from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka hits the stores.

Meanwhile social media websites like Twitter have received a barrage of interesting and amusing comments from the “Mango People”. While onion takes its own sweet time to get back into the reach of commoners like us, let's keep ourselves amused with these funny tweets. Check them out:
