Rohit Sharma's remarks following the Champions Trophy 2025 brought joy to the entire nation. Amidst numerous speculations regarding his future in cricket, Rohit addressed those concerns in his signature style by stating, "I am not considering retirement from this format. I want to clarify that there will be no rumors moving forward. My current focus remains unchanged." This declaration quickly gained widespread attention after the Champions Trophy 2025 final. The following day, Rohit elaborated further on his career trajectory, saying, "I’m currently embracing the present. It wouldn't be right for me to plan too far ahead. At this moment, my priority is to perform well and sustain a positive approach. I am not in a position to determine if I will or will not participate in the 2027 World Cup," as shared during his appearance on Jio Hotstar.
"There is no advantage in making such statements right now. I have always approached my career on a step-by-step basis," he added. Nevertheless, a report suggests that Rohit may already have intentions to continue until the 2027 World Cup. As per the report by Cricbuzz, “If all goes according to his plans, he could potentially retire from international cricket following the ICC event, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.” Rohit will turn 38 in two months, and by the time the 2027 ODI World Cup occurs, he will be 40 years old. According to the same report, Rohit is expected to "collaborate" with Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team, focusing on "fitness, batting, and strategy." India has 27 ODIs lined up between 2025 and the 2027 World Cup, with the possibility of more matches being added. Rohit plans to use these games as preparation for the significant tournament.
Nayar is recognized as an esteemed coach among Indian cricketers, earning praise from players like Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul for his coaching methods. He is also a former teammate of Rohit. The report further indicated uncertainty regarding Rohit’s future in Test cricket, noting that his performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy was less than stellar. The report mentioned that his form during the IPL would be critical in determining his selection for the tour of England in June. A source was quoted saying, "Let’s finish the IPL first. Only an astrologer would look so far into the future." Rohit intends to continue playing in both ODI and Test formats after retiring from T20Is.
