The case hearing was listed to be held on Wednesday but Supreme Court of India said it would take up the matter again in two weeks.
The future of BCCI’s torch bearers, President Saurav Ganguly and secretary Jai Shah remains unanswered by the Supreme Court of India.
The BCCI has filed the case proposing several amendments to the BCCI board’s constitution which upon adoption can change some of the significant reforms in BCCI.
The case was supposed to be heard by the two judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde and Justice L. Nageshwara Rao.
Due to the present COVID-19 situation, the two-judge bench on Wednesday had a virtual meeting in which they decided to discuss on the matter again within 2 weeks.
The decision for replacing the President of BCCI comes as a result of Saurav Ganguly’s term as the President being ended in the past month.
According to BBCI constitution, an office bearer or President is allowed to serve his/her term for two consecutive terms spanning six years at BCCI or state level or a combination of both following which a cooling period of three year would be mandatory.
The above rule was corroborated by the Supreme Court in 2018 and modified the clause concerning the cooling off period to two terms instead of just one.
In another plea BCCI requested the Supreme Court to consider amendments related to the Board’s constitution. The pleas include tweaking the cooling off period of the office bearers, modifying the disqualification criteria, giving unparalleled powers to the secretary of BCCI, and stopping the court from having any say if the BCCI board wants to alter its constitution.
Reportedly, Saurav Ganguly’s term come to an end on July 27, the secretary Shah’s terms has been ended last month; however the exact date could not be confirmed.
The BCCI’s amendments which were still under approval by the apex court were unanimously approved by the state associations comprising the BCCI’s general body.
