An unidentified man ripped off a Muslim girl’s hijab yelling that the girl is a “terrorist” in the US state of Georgia.
On Monday, the victim, aged 14, was walking with a group in the parking lot of Perimeter Mall near the Maggiano's Little Italy in Atlanta at 9:40 p.m., when the man approached the girl and fled after snatching the hijab, said the police.
Dunwoody police said they were searching for the man, who is accused of ripping the hijab of the Muslim girl while yelling that the girl is a "terrorist", reported The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"Dunwoody is a very diverse community, welcoming people of all faiths. Therefore, an incident such as this one is unusual," said the Police Chief Billy Grogan.
"The Dunwoody Police Department is committed to protecting our citizens and will conduct a thorough investigation," said Grogan.
The Dunwoody police are calling the case an assault.
The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is offering a reward of USD 1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man.
"We thank local law enforcement for pledging to investigate this despicable attack, which is the latest in a wave of anti-Muslim hate crimes across the nation," said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the executive director of CAIR-Georgia.
Mitchell said that the girl’s family is shaken by the attack.
The incident comes amid a spike in assaults and hate crimes targeting the hijab-wearing women all across the United States.
