The Historic peace pact is finally signed between India and Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), an insurgent group of Nagaland. The announcement was made in the presence of Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister, Rajnath Singh, the home minister, Thuingaleng Muivah - chief NSCN (I-M) and a few others.
Muivah said that, "I thank God for this momentous occasion. Naga people have great respect for Mahatma Gandhi. We appreciate the statesmanship of (former PM) Atal Bihari Vajpayee."
"Under PM Narendra Modi, we have come close to understand each other, and worked out a new relation between the two parties ... Nagas will forever remember you for your statesmanship," he added.
Describing the pact a historic deal, PM Narendra Modi said that it has been six decades that the Nagaland political issue is being lingering, charging heavy on generations of people. He said that Isak Swu and Muivah showed courage and wisdom as leaders, which resulted in this historic deal.
Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN)
In early 1980, Isak Chishi Swu, Thuingaleng Muivah and SS Khaplang founded Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) in opposition to Shillong deal, which was signed between India and Naga National Council at that time. The aim of the group was to establish Nagalim, a sovereign nation, through insurgency. None of the talks between the Center and the group turned fruitful in the past. Because of disagreements between group leaders over peace talks with India Government, the NSCN split into NSCN (Khaplang) AND NSCN (Isak-Muivah) in 1998.
