In what can be called as a feat of sorts in the recent Mumbai rape case, all the five suspects — Kasim Bangali, Salim Ansari, Chand Sheikh, Siraj Rehman and Vijay Jadav — were nabbed by the Mumbai and Delhi police within 72 hours of the crime. The last arrest was made in Delhi last day.
However, the horror doesn't end there! During the investigation, it was found that the men were not the first-time offenders. Apparently, the perpetrators have assaulted women before, incidents that went unreported in the past.
Although no previous records of sexual assault was found against them, some of them had been earlier booked under robbery.
The rape case will be tried in a fast-track court. Noted criminal lawyer Ujjwal Nikam will be the public prosecutor in the case. Meanwhile, the incident has incensed the entire nation and triggered heated debate on how safe are woman in India?
The heinous crime took place on Thursday evening when the 22-year-old photojournalist, working with an English lifestyle magazine, was on an assignment in the deserted Shakti Mills along with a male colleague. The miscreants tied up the man and raped her turn by turn.
Investigations reveal a malevolent confidence and practice between the men. Apparently, two men clicked photos of the woman after they raped her and threatened to release them if she went to the police. What's more, they also ordered the woman to clean up the scene of crime. After the crime, they went to their homes — some watched movies while others went off to sleep, revealed police.
“The alleged leader of the gang, Salim Ansari, 27, escaped to Delhi after the arrest of the first suspect, Chand Sheikh, on Friday morning. After tracking Ansari's mobile phone and interrogating his family members, the Mumbai cops found out that he had left for Delhi from Kurla station. Ansari, picked up from West Delhi this morning, had allegedly planned to stay with a relative there before moving to Bihar and then to Bangladesh,” wrote NDTV.
