Mumbai Named Fifth Best Food City In the World

Mumbai's unique food culture has been recognized thanks to a recent ranking published by popular food and travel guide Taste Atlas. As part of the 2024-25 Taste Atlas Awards, the guide released a list based on rankings in various food-related categories. Mumbai ranks 5th in the list of “World's 100 Best Gourmet Cities”. Previously, all four cities were in Italy: Naples, Milan, Bologna and Florence. After Mumbai, Rome, Paris, Vienna, Turin and Osaka are in the top 10. For the entire list, the guide states: “Based on 477,287 valid food reviews for 15,478 foods in the database, these cities are 100 out of the 17,073 cities in the database Cities with the highest average ratings for local and national foods that are common. They are served, they are excellent."

Taste Atlas specifically mentions some of the must-try dishes in Mumbai on its website, including Bhel Puri, Pav Bhaji, Vada Pav and Ragda Patis. We have mentioned some of the most famous traditional restaurants in the city including Ram Ashraya, Shree Thakur Bhojanale and Madras Café. Other Indian cities also feature on Taste Atlas' list of the world's 100 best foodie cities, with three cities joining Mumbai in the top 50. Globally, Amritsar ranked 43rd, New Delhi 45th and Hyderabad 50th. Kolkata was ranked 71st and Chennai 75th. In fifth place are Naples, Milan, Bologna, Florence and Mumbai.

Additionally, Taste Atlas recognizes certain regions of India as some of the “best gourmet regions” in the world. Punjab ranked 7th in the world. The guide recommends delicacies like Amritsari Kulcha, Tikka, Shahi Paneer, Tandoori Murgh, Saag Paneer and more. Other Indian states also made it into the top 100 list. As part of the 2024-25 Taste Atlas Awards, the guide also published a ranking of the world's best foods. India didn't make it into the top 10 but still shone.
