2016 edition of the IPL’s cricketing action kicked off on 9 April with the opening match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and the new franchise, Rising Pune Supergiants. A nine-wicket win over defending champions Mumbai Indians, is what Pune Supergiants has done in the opening match of IPL 2016.
Rising Pune Supergiants made a excellent start to their life in the IPL, with their seamers waylaying Mumbai Indians' top order to set up a breezy nine-wicket win over the defending champions. Ajinkya Rahane steering with a fluent unbeaten 66 off 42 balls. Pune have dominated the Maharashtra Derby.
The Mumbai bowlers were hapless as they suffered some mauling from the batsmen of Supergiants. Harbhajan Singh was the lone wicket-taker and the other bowlers couldn't do much as they went for runs.
Just 122 runs to chase, the Pune openers started off in an absolute fashion as they got boundaries consistently. Faf du Plessis and Ajinkya Rahane got their team off to a boisterous start and the latter remained unbeaten on 66 to take his team home. Du Plessis perished after scoring 33 but it was enough for his team. Kevin Pietersen walked in at number 3 and offered some big hits later on as Pune marched to the target.
