So you think that tears are your greatest weapon against men. Think again. Tears might draw sympathy from a man in normal circumstances. But when it comea to sex, tears dampen sexual arousal of a man. According to a study by Noam Sobel, a cognitive neuroscientist at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, tears contain chemical signals that reduces testosterone levels in men that is responsible for sexual arousal.
During the research, men were asked to sniff vials containing either women’s tears or saline that were applied to their cheeks. The study revealed that men who sniffed saline perceived those women as more sexually attractive than those who had sniffed tears. Decrease in sexual arousal was reported for men who had taken a whiff of tears and not saline. In these men, reduced activity was reported in hypothalamus, the region of brain which is associated with sexual arousal.
Ad Vingerhoets from Tilburg University, Netherlands, who studies emotion, refuted this study saying that tears and sexual nature cannot be linked as there is no justification – either theoretical, logical or empirical. However, in mice the link between tears and sexual act was established. Denise Chen, from Rice University in Houston, Texas, who studies human olfaction was of the opinion that Noam Sobel's study might be useful in further studies on the relation between sexual arousal and tears.
