PM convenes meeting on cotton export

With the export of cotton issue is still a matter of controversy, the prime minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to convene a meeting to look into the action and call for an action. He is likely to allow the shipment of fibre, which has been supported by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and the union minister for agriculture, Sharad Pawar. Before the meeting, the finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee will hold talks with Pawar and textiles minister Anand Sharma.

The government will presumably allow the export of 20 lakh bales of cotton in addition to what has been exported now. It has to be mentioned here that one bale is equal to 170 kilos. It may be recalled that Anand Sharma has met Pranab twice in the last week to discuss the same issue.  Also, the government has partially lifted ban on cotton exports last month after coming under pressure from Narendra Modi and Sharad Pawar.

The final decision on the matter would be taken on Monday when prime minister, Gujarat chief minister and union minister meet. After taking an appropriate decision, the prime minister is likely to convene a press meet. (Phani)
