Following the massive earthquake in Indonesia and tremors in several parts of the country, six teams of National Disaster Response Force moved to Chennai in order to plunge into action and rescue people from floods in case tsunami hits or any untoward incident takes place. This was merely a precautionary measure and people need not get panic over the same.
Meanwhile, the union home ministry that’s looking into the precautionary measures, has evacuated the Andaman administration to a safer place only to be on a safe side. Also, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has issued an alert and in the wake of the same, rescue and response teams in Chennai have initiated precautionary drills.
On the other hand, several announcements have been made in coastal parts of the country including Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Kochi asking fishermen not to go for fishing. Further, fishermen who already ventured out of fishing were asked to return this afternoon. The home ministry, while stating that there’s nothing to worry, has stressed that the government was ready to do deal with any kind of disaster. Union home secretary, R K Singh has also spoke to the chief secretaries of Tamil Nadu and Odisha, and declared that there are no signs of tsunami. (Phani)
