World Economic Forum (WEF) revealed shocking position of India in a report on gender on the economic participation and opportunity index, in which the Asia’s third largest economy stood 139 among 145 countries. This shows that the participation of women in the workforce of India, still continues to be shocking low even in 2015!

The recent rank is five positions below in 2014, when its position was 134 out of 142 countries. This is even the lowest position since 2006, the year when the report’s first edition was published. The study is called the Global Gender Gap Report 2015. According to the study, India’s score on economic equality is a dismal 0.383. Inequality is indicated by 0, while perfect equality is represented by 1.

The report said, “Economic participation and opportunity (in India) has declined due to a decrease in wage equality for similar work and less female labour force participation.”

WEF report says that overall ranking of India on the basis of it average performance on political, economic, health and education categories improved from last year. The country stood 108 among 145 countries.

The global index was topped by Iceland and followed by Norway and Finland. The position of the US is 28 and that of China is 91. The last three countries in the list were Syria, Pakistan and Yemen.

The report said, “A clear drawback in this category is the absence of any indicators capturing differences between the participation of women and men at local levels of government.”
