Every year, August 30th is celebrated as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances and it is celebrated to pay tributes to people who faced enforced disappearances in their life. United Nations along with the Amnesty International are trying hard to raise awareness about enforced disappearance. They are trying hard to educate the people about the crime and how it should not be used as a tool in the case of a conflict. In Kosovo, more than 6000 people went missing since 1999, as per the reports from the United Nations.

In Iran, thousands are missing because of the political differences after the 1988 prison massacre. Countries like Sri Lanka, Syria, Zimbabwe and Argentina reported a high number of missing people and they are more than 2 lakh. The United Nations General Assembly on December 21st, 2010 announced August 30th as International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. The United Nations also expressed their concern about the increased number of disappearing cases all over the world. They can be caused by abduction, arrest, or detention. This turned out to be a new strategy to create terror and pain in the society.

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is observed to raise awareness in the society as the governments have refused to disclose the whereabouts of the missing. This also turned out to be a global problem and it is a serious violation of human rights and has no restrictions to a specific region.
