Hindu Munnani leader Ramagopalan has charged that Tamils were attacked during the rule of Tipu Sultan and pressure was built on superstar Rajinikanth even before he attempted to hear the outline of biopic proposed on Tipu Sultan. Ramagopalan’s charge was in response to media reports about a Karnataka film producer‘s plan to approach Mr. Rajinikanth to don the role of the eighteenth century ruler.

Mr. Ramagopalan recalled autobiographical series of Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran in which he mentioned that his family was forced to move to Palakkad from Coimbatore due to Tipu’s attacks. The outfit said that it would be offensive to MGR’s memory to present a movie in which the “fanatical Muslim ruler” is portrayed as a freedom fighter.

“Such a film would be an insult to Tamils,” Ramagopalan claimed.

L. Ganesan senior BJP leader who expressed confidence that Mr. Rajinikanth will not entertain such project, said, “I see nothing wrong in Mr. Ramagopalan’s views on Tipu Sultan. Those are historical facts.”

R. Sarathkumar, president of Actor and South Indian Film Artistes’ Association said, “The statement issued by Mr. Ramagopalan is in the form of a request. It should be Mr. Rajinikanth’s prerogative to accept or reject it.”
