The anti corruption crusader set the huge crowd wondering of his vigor at that age, with his over flowing oratorical skills. The crowds were spell-bound in Jantar Mantar at Delhi on the crusaders fifth round of single day fast in protest against corruption on Sunday. This time Team Anna was protesting for the passage of a strong Lokpal Bill and stronger whistleblower protection programme. Apart from Anna, the podium had assembled other Team Anna members of likes, Santosh Hegde, Shanti Bhushan, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia.
The 74-year old Gandhian visited the Raj Ghat and reached the venue at 11 am to receive pompous welcome from followers, who were assembled in large numbers. Before the fast he addressed the gathering and said, “Their (whistleblowers') mothers, their children, their fathers, their wives are crying for justice. But this government has gone dumb and deaf. It is not listening to the cries of people.”
At least 15 people, who tried to blow the lid on scams or fought the menace of corruption in other ways, have been killed since 2010, according to Team Anna. And that includes the recent for slain IPS officer Narendra Kumar from Madhya Pradesh who was killed by suspected mining mafia on March 8. Sunday’s fast was specially demanded justice to him and others. The family members of the slain people were also present at the venue.
Unperturbed by the protest this time, the ruling UPA government dismissed the Team Anna’s protest only for mileage. Union Minister E Ahmad asserted that the Lokpal Bill drafted by the Government is “one of the best”. “If you want to blow up a small issue, you can. But so far the UPA Government is concerned, not perturbed.... Parliament is supreme.... We are always following Parliamentary procedures. Parliament’s importance cannot be reduced.” However, he also maintained that as it was a democratic country, everyone had equal rights to protest. (With inputs from internet- AarKay)
