A heated political debate is going on in India on banning beef and cow slaughter in the wake of the lynching in Dadri. Amid this, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said that the Congress party would extend support incase government brings law on cow slaughter in India. He added that BJP should know that there is ban on cow slaughter in 24 states and most of them were imposed when congress was on power.

Digvijaya Singh said, “I am surprised the BJP does not know that out of the 29 states, cow slaughter is banned in 24 states. And in most of these states, the prohibition was imposed by Congress governments. The Congress Working Committee had passed a resolution in the 1930s seeking a ban on cow slaughter. There was a ban on cow slaughter during Mughal rule. In the Bhopal riyasat of the Nawab, there was a ban on cow slaughter.”

The senior congress leader has accused BJP of raising the issue to shadow its failures on the economic front saying that, “The BJP should understand that it is the Congress that had brought the law in several states banning cow slaughter. All these issues are being raised because they have been a failure on all fronts. The rupee is falling, prices are rising, there are no jobs, there is a slump in the manufacturing sector, export of cow meat is on the rise….To hide all these, they are raising these issues.”

As a reply to question regarding the BJP’s demand on cow slaughter ban in Kerala by the Congress government, Mr Singh said that it is up to the party in Kerala to decide. He said, “Agar desh mein is tarah ka kanoon laaya jaata hai toh Congress samarthan karegi.”
