It took more than 80 years for this grandmom to complete her schooling. At the age of 99, she had finally received her high school certificate, or as they say, diploma. Audrey Crabtree, of Cedar Falls, said that she feels smarter with the diploma in hand.
Waterloo East High School awarded the honorary diploma to Crabtree after she outlived all three husbands. She left school in 1932 after a swimming accident forced to take several days off. She was later entrusted with the responsibility of caring for her grandmother.
She could still have finished school, but chose instead to get married to her florist husband in 1957. The man passed away from a heart attack within months of setting up 'Flowers by Audrey'. Crabtree then managed the successful business for 28 years.
Audrey Crabtree had married two more times and now has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. All her husbands passed away. Though she was personally and professionally content, her one regret was of not completing high school. Now that she has achieved it, she finally received her last report card with a smile.
