A Chinese national has been arrested in Delhi in connection with a massive cyber fraud worth Rs 100 crore, officials said on Tuesday. Police said Fang Chenjin was involved in an online stock trading scam carried out through a WhatsApp group. The incident came to light after one of the victims, Suresh Kurichiel Achutan, filed a complaint on a cybercrime portal alleging that he was cheated of Rs 43.5 lakhs. According to the complaint, victims were lured into fraudulent stock market training courses and then tricked into investing their money in numerous trades. The funds were then transferred to several bank accounts controlled by the defendant. During the investigation, police discovered that the funds were in a bank account. This was in connection with a fraudulent transaction of Rs 1.25 lakh in April. According to police, it was a bank account in the name of Maha Lakshmi Traders in Mundaka, the capital.

A cell phone related to the crime was also recovered and police were able to identify Chenjin. According to police, the suspect was a resident of Delhi's Safdarjung area. Police said the cellphone used in the crime recorded WhatsApp conversations between Chenjin and his associates. In the chat, the suspect instructed his assistants to top up the cell phone number used in the scam. At least 17 complaints were registered on the cybercrime portal, all linked to the same bank account. This complaint is a fraud of Rs 100 crores. Additionally, two other cases related to cybercrime and money laundering in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are linked to Chenjin, police said. The scam was carried out through an online WhatsApp group scam targeting individuals. Further investigations are underway.
