Universities and schools reopened in China this week and a new rule from a University advises female students to not wear too revealing clothes to avoid drawing temptation from men.
A Chinese University is in limelight for its bizarre rule that ordered female students from refraining to wear exposing clothes in order to avoid unnecessary attention from men. This news comes just a week after schools and colleges in China have reopened as the country recovered from the pandemic.
Guangxi University is located in southwest China and has reopened operations for a week. In its 50-pointed guidelines to the students, this unique rule was mentioned. Apparently, the University has a separate dress code for the first-year female students.
The guidelines also implied that women were responsible for sexual harassment or even assaults.
According to the guidelines, female students must not wear low-cut dresses, skirts, and should not expose their waist or back.
The female students were also recommended to not wear high heels under certain circumstances. Spaghetti-strap tops are banned inside the University’s library.
Upon knowing this, netizens slammed the University by saying that the University reflects typical victim blaming.
In China’s twitter-like social media platform, the hashtag Guangxi University Female Students’ security guide has garnered 200 million views on Weibo, the social media of China.
Wuhan, the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic and also the Chinese city that was hard-hit by the virus reopened all its schools and kindergartens on Tuesday.
As many as 2842 educational institutions across the Wuhan city opened their doors to almost 1.4 million students according to the local government’s announcement on Monday.
In India last year, Hyderabad’s St. Francis College for Women had deployed security guards at the entry gate to inspect the length of the Kurtis worn by the female students of the institute and also stopped them from attending classes if they were found to be flouting the dress code of the college.
A notice was issued by the college which made it mandatory for all the female students to wear Kurtis that were of knee length or longer. This notice was also circulated in the Whatsapp group of the college.
The students opposed this move by the college outright and did not enter the classrooms till the rule was revoked. Haywire was created across the college which prompted the media to reach the college.
