USA is collecting lot of data pertaining to India through the records of telephone and internet. The Director of National Intelligence a US Government Office collected 13.5 billion pieces of information over a period of one month. The information collected is not particularly connected to terrorism. It is surprising that the friendly Nation of India is placed on top for surveillance for reasons best known to them.
Two programs are being used for collecting this data. Boundless Informant gets quantitative information of the number of calls and emails gathered by the intelligence agency and second one PRISM collects qualitative data i.e., contents of that data.
The data is collected through Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Apple, YouTube and other social network sites and browsers. Cooperation from Indian telephone companies is not ruled out.
The Director of National Intelligence denied giving any information on it. They say that appropriate explanation will be given through diplomatic channels as every query on the activities of Intelligence agency cannot be revealed publicly.
Talking on the issue, the External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid says that it cannot be called snooping. But experts say that collection of metadata is not a small thing. It is a very serious matter. But DNI solicits cooperation from all countries in dealing with the issues related to mutual challenges.
