2 years after the earthquake and tsunami wrecked the Fukushima Nuclear plant, Japan is still battling to devise desperate ways to prevent radioactive water from leaking from the plant.

Yesterday, the Japanese government announced a $470 million investment on a subterranean ice wall to repress the contaminated water from oozing into the sea.

The decision comes ahead of International Olympic Committee's selection of 2020 Olympics host. Tokyo is one of the contending nations for the 2020 Games, along with Istanbul and Madrid.

The Fukushima Dai-ichi plant has been discharging tons of contaminated underground water. Reports of leaks from radioactive water reservoir in recent weeks have raised concerns over Tokyo Electric Power Co., unsuccessful attempts to prevent the damage.

"Instead of leaving this up to TEPCO, the government will step forward and take charge," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said after adopting the outline. "The world is watching if we can properly handle the contaminated water but also the entire decommissioning of the plant."
