Ministry of Communications & Information Technology is the Central department responsible for all administrative functions relating to formulation, execution and implementation of IT policies.
Today is going to be a day that would be remembered by all involved in the field of electronics in the country. The main reason is that the Government of India in its bid to give due recognition plans to rename the Department of Information Technology (DIT) as Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY). The Union Minister of Communications Kapil Sibal shall formally rechristen the department today in Delhi. An official communiqué was released on Wednesday, by the Ministry in this regards, says "Recently, the cabinet secretariat amended the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules 1961 and renamed the Department of Information Technology as Department of Electronics and Information Technology."
If one remembers rightly this IT Department was earlier Department of Electronics in the eighties. But later after the posts and telecommunication were merged with the information Technology in 2001, it became, Department of Information Technology. However as the scenario changes and electronics once again emerge to play an important role in Information Tech, the government decides on the change. The department is also in the process of initiating several measures to renew the thrust to the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) in the country. A new National Policy on Electronics is under finalization and a draft of the same was released by the communications minister last October. (With inputs from internet: AarKay)
