The BCCI is on the lookout for a new head coach for the Indian men's cricket team as Rahul Dravid's term is coming to an end after the T20 World Cup in 2024. The board has put out advertisements for new applications, but Dravid is also eligible to reapply. However, it seems that the former India batsman has already made up his mind and is not interested in carrying on beyond the upcoming T20 World Cup. According to reports, Dravid had declined the offer of some senior members of the team to continue as India's Test coach for another year. It seems that the extension he signed after the ODI World Cup in 2023 will be his last. If Dravid had agreed to stay on as India's Test coach, the BCCI might have opted for format-specific coaches, but that is no longer an option.

As the search for a new coach begins, many have speculated about VVS Laxman's potential candidacy. Although he has led the team as head coach before, he is not among the top contenders for the permanent position. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering overseas options for the role, as confirmed by the board's secretary Jay Shah. Shah stated that the decision on whether to appoint an Indian or foreign coach will be up to the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), as the BCCI is a global entity. Currently, Stephen Fleming and Ricky Ponting are rumored to be at the top of the wishlist. Another overseas coach, Justin Langer, who coaches the Lucknow Super Giants, has also shown interest in coaching the Indian team.
