BCCI secretary Jay Shah said no Australian had been considered for the post of head coach of the Indian national team. The Indian board recently opened applications for the position as Rahul Dravid's coaching stint is set to end after the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). The application deadline for this position is May 27th at 6:00 p.m. It was recently reported that the BCCI has approached Australian captain Ricky Ponting, a two-time World Cup winner, for the role. Jay Shah, however, dismissed the media reports and said a "careful" process needed to be followed to find the right candidate for the job.
“Neither I nor the BCCI have ever approached any former Australian cricketer for a coaching offer. The reports in some sections of the media are completely false. We are very keen to find the right coach for the national team. We are focused on understanding that." To deepen the structure of the national team and identify those placed in the higher echelons, it is important that the coaches have comprehensive knowledge of the national cricket framework, Dravid said in a statement following Ravi Shastri T20 retirement in the UAE Dravid's tenure ended after last year's ODI World Cup, where India finished runners-up, following which the BCCI extended his contract.
When we talk about international cricket, there is no role more prestigious than that of the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Team India has the largest fan base in the world and enjoys unparalleled support. Our rich history and passion for gaming have made this one of the highest paying jobs in the world. This role requires a high level of professionalism as we develop the best cricketers in the world and the next generation of talented cricketers. It is a great honor to fulfill the wishes of a billion fans and the BCCI will select the right candidate who can take Indian cricket forward." Most of the Indian cricketers will leave for the T20 World Cup in New York on May 25. Players participating in the IPL final will be played on May 27.
