PV Sindhu, who recently clinched bronze at the 2013 Badminton World Championships, has been honored with an Arjuna award, the second in her family. Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Jitendra Singh handed over the award to Sindhu at the Sports Authority of India office.
The player had to miss receiving the award at the function held on 31st August at the Rashtrapati Bhawan as she was tied up with the final match of the Indian Badminton League that day. On Tuesday, she and her mother Vijaya had to wait longer than anticipated as the SAI’s general body meeting crossed its time limit. On receiving the award, Sindhu was visibly happy for being chosen.
“I had not expected to be considered for the award this year. I returned from the World championship and very soon, I was surprised to learn that I was among the chosen ones. I owe it to my parents and coach P. Gopi Chand,” the champion said.
As an awardee, she gains Rs 5 Lakhs, an Arjuna statue and a citation. Sindhu's father Ramana, a volleyball player, received an Arjuna in 2000. “It is really nice that we have two Arjuna awardees at home. It really feels good to see that father and daughter have won Arjuna Award in different disciplines,”mother Vijaya expressed.
