The South African cricket team, Led by Graeme Smith, arrived in India this morning and has already begun preparations to show its mettle in the forthcoming cricket extravaganza.
The team, which never won the world cup but brimming with confidence after it had beaten India 3-2 in the recent ODI series, arrived in Chennai to a tumultuous welcome by the ICC officials.
The South African team has been drawn in Group B along with India, England, West Indies, Bangladesh and minnows Ireland and Netherlands.
They will play a warm up match against Zimbabwe in Delhi on February 12 and their opening match is against the West Indies at Feroz Shah Kotla ground in New Delhi on February 24.
Meanwhile, young batsman Suresh Raina said in an interview that the fight for the world cup would be mainly among the teams of the sub-continent, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. “The domination of Australia is over and this time the fight is limited to India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan,” he told PTI. He however hastened to add that England can also be a challenger this time as they have improved a lot after winning the Ashes.
