Koodankulam nuke gets fresh feelers from Colombo. The island country is revved up with fear incase a disaster.
The Lankan authorities seemed to be worried over the nuke plants in India and especially on the one’s nearer to them in Tamil Nadu. Most probably the country is more concerned over the possible impact of radiation from India's nuclear power plants located in the southern region. Colombo is intending to take up the matter with the global atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA on the issue. Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka expressed the country’s concern, at Colombo on Monday, over the issue. He added that they would take up the matter with IAEA in September.
"We respect the right of India to have nuclear power stations. But our concerns are on the possible radiation affects they could have on Sri Lanka. We have already written a letter", Ranawaka said. Adding that the IAEA suggests a mutual pact on the matter should be reached between the two countries. Lankan officials identified three nuclear plants located on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu. In fact the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant is located nearly 250 Kms away from the island and the country has no plants of its own. Colombo’s only concern is for radiation and disaster management, as they are not much equipped on the issue. There seems to be a dialogue opened between both the countries on the subject.
