Colombo’s vindictive stand against India is admonished. Colombo just woke up to the fact that Indian Nuke plants post the UN resolution, on war crimes.
Sri Lanka had the big brother support from China while the resolution proposed by US and adopted by the UN at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva was voted for by the Indian government late last month. This fact did not go down the Lankan throat, feel the critics. Initially the Lankan government expressed that it could understand the domestic pressure on the voting of India. But later was a bit less diplomatic with India on many issues like the Navy attacks.
On Monday Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka expressed the country’s concern over the Indian Nuke plants especially situated in the Coastal towns. Colombo also intends to take up the matter with the global atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA on the issue. Lankan officials identified three nuclear plants located on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu. In fact the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli district of the state, is located nearly 250 Kms away from the island and Lanka has no plants of its own.
A video produced as a documentary for the evils of war crimes in Sri Lanka, was displayed at Geneva. The video shows the 12 year old son of Vellupillai Prabhakaran body with bullets in his chest. The shocking video clip is a part of a British documentary to be aired this week, which allegedly showed Balachandran son of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief lying dead with five bullet holes on his chest. The May 18, 2009 footage of the 12-year-old was screened at the FIFDH film festival in Geneva.
According to reports, the Channel 4's shocking new video is said to be a 'trophy video' shot by Sri Lankan troops which were present during the cold-blooded execution of the Prabhakaran’s family. The ethnic conflict one of the worst in the continent that lasted for twenty five years came to an end in 2009. This video played a crucial role at Geneva and maximum voted for the resolution proposed by US.
India had definitely bowed to the linguistic pressure from the parties of Tamil Nadu. On this issue the parties in the Tamil Nadu State cut barriers and univocally urged the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to support the resolution and the UPA bowed to pressure.
Well getting back at the nuke fear expressed by the Lankans, the critics feel that this fear is stemmed as retaliation to India’s stand at Geneva. Because the nuke plants in the country are not established overnight and the process had begun some 2-3 years back and some were existent since sometime. But the concern seems to have risen just now by the authorities. This by itself shows that Colombo wanted a sweet revenge over India.
At this point one issue that needs to be remembered is that the Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister GL Peres had gone on record to rule out any friction with India over one resolution. Looking at the given situation it only seems evident that there is an invisible hand working against India… and who could that be? Colombo had to realize one issue before taking a stand against India is that the Country lost one of its former Prime Ministers to the LTTE. Rajiv Gandhi was castigated by the Tamil fighters for sending the Indian Peace Keeping Force to aid the Lankan Army fight terrorism.
