Edhi Foundation said that Geeta would be handed over to Sushma Swaraj by Bilquis Edhi. The verbally and aurally challenged woman from India, who spent 13 years under the affection of charity workers in Karachi, is likely to return to India today under a warm welcome.

 

The Hindu quoted the Ministry of External Affairs that seven of the Edhi Foundation members would accompany Geeta to India. She will arrive from Karachi in a Pakistan Airways flight, where the Pakistan High Commission’s senior diplomats will welcome her at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Edhi Foundation managing trustee, Faisal Edhi, was quoted by the Hindu as saying that, “My mother Bilquis Edhi has taken care of Geeta all these years and she will return after ensuring Geeta’s care in India.”

After the press conference by the External Affairs Minister, the Edhi Foundation members and Geeta would be felicitated by the High Commissioner of Pakistan, on the High Commission premises.

Geeta’s journey of discovering the family

Geeta’s return to India is her first step towards discovering the family. She will meet the family from Bihar that claimed that she belonged to them and lost when she was walked across the India-Pakistan border in Punjab by mistake.

“They will see each other for the first time,” said an official source.

India stated that only after the DNA test, Geeta will be allowed to be adopted by the family. Meanwhile, two organizations were selected by the MEA to host Geeta if the DNA tests come out unsuccessful.

Abdul Sattar Edhi, Edhi Foundation founder, and Bilquis, his wife, are fond of Geeta. Her story came into light when Bilquis Edhi began to introduce her to visitors from India to the Foundation’s office in Karachi.
