Actress-filmmaker Angelina Jolie is set to produce an animated film on Afghan girl titled, ‘The Breadwinner’. The film revolves around a young girl living under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The film is an inspiration and adaptation from the young adult novel of Deborah Ellis with the same title.
From a screen story by Ellis, ‘the Breadwinner’ will be directed by Nora Twomey and Anita Doron will see over the screenplay. Expected to begin in August, the project is due for completion in early 2017.
The story moves around a young girl named Parvana. She disguises herself as a boy to become the breadwinner of her family. Parvana’s father is unfairly imprisoned.
The culture, history and beauty of Afghanistan will also be show cased in ‘The Breadwinner’. Plans to produce the film in one of the official languages of Afghanistan, Dari, also exist besides the English language version.
Jolie Pitt said, “Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict, and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution.”
“I am delighted to be working with a talented team of artists who I know will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana,” she added.
