Story
The film revolves around Sunny (Sharib), an aspiring actor waiting for a break in Bollywood. After being rejected in many auditions Sunny takes up a job (for money) of an assistant director for a documentary project. The assignment changes his life as he gets kidnapped by a terrorist group of Pakistan, who take him instead of an American crew member.
His kidnappers take him to Pakistan and decide to keep him till they locate the original member. While in captivity, Sunny discovers that India and Pakistan is connected to each other by Bollywood. The story is about Sunny’s escape from captivity to his homeland. But it weaves a heart-moving story of India-Pakistan’s rivalry.
Analysis :
Filmistaan is more about the moments and not about the whole script. The film seamlessly binds serious issues like cross border terrorism, infiltration and Islamic fundamentalism with the all-pervading love for Bollywood across both sides of the border. Though the film deals with heavy topics but it manages to be consistently light hearted.
The film's story is novel but not an out of the world product. It's the presentation of the movie that makes it brilliant. Director Nitin Kakkar has used humor and subtlety to bring out the dynamics of India and Pakistan. The beauty of the film lies in its subtlety, sans the mandatory preachy dialogue.
Performance :
Sharib Hashmi plays the lead role of Sunny and delivers with brilliance. He endearingly enacts the role of a Bollywood film buff with conviction (complete with filmi keedas and keedapanti). In a particular scene he humors the village children by mimicing the varied style of Bollywood actors while wielding a gun. In the next scene he is shown lying hurt and helpless. The two scenes are diametrically opposite and he carries it off with conviction. Hashmi shows himself as a versatile actor and without airs. Finally Bollywood has found an actor with freshness.
Innamulhaq is also noteworthy in his acting skill. He matches his caliber with Hashmi. His fantastic camaraderie with Hashmi is brilliant. Hashmi and Innam compliment each other in this film.
Kumud Mishra and Gopal Dutt also did a great job in their respective roles.
Final Word:
A must watch. Filmistaan is a crackling movie with not a dull moment to spare.
