In India, the Teachers day is celebrated on September 5th on the occasion of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great teacher.
Radhakrishnan believes in education, and he was even a famous diplomat, scholar, the President of India and above all, a teacher.
Radhakrishnan said, “I would be more privileged if the September 5th which is my birthday, is observed as the teachers day countrywide, instead of just celebrating it as my birthday alone,” when a few of his students and friends reached out to him for celebrating his birthday.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5th, 1888 and left his breath on 17 April 1975. In his life term, he was put in many respectful positions for his immense knowledge and his beliefs towards the society. Radhakrishnan holds the record of being the first vice president of India and the second president of India.
When a few of his students arranged a gathering in 1965, to pay obeisance to their great teacher of repute, Radhakrishnan spoke in the meeting saying that, his birthday should be identified as the teachers day and thus pay homage to the great teachers of India and Bangladesh.
After the proposal was put in front of the government, from 1967, September 5th, Radhakrishnan’s birthday is officially celebrated as the teachers’ day. Reacting to this, Jawaharlal Nehru, the close friend of Radhakrishnan said, “More than a president or any position, Radhakrishnan is best identified as a teacher. His teachings will continue to inspire for the generations to come.”
In the later years, even after the death on Radhakrishnan in 1975, he is being identified by the Indian government in some or the other way. In fact, this year, in the recent meeting, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared to release Rs.10 and Rs.125 coins for commemorating and honoring India’s pride Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
However finally, along with celebrating the teachers’ day, let us even contribute our part in building up the nation, by following such a great honorable person’s teachings.
