During the summer of 2020, when the entire world came to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill, a physician of Indian descent specializing in immunology and pediatrics in Canada, took a stand against government-enforced lockdowns and vaccination requirements. However, her position faced legal action from medical organizations and censorship from the previous management of X/Twitter. Dr. Gill is currently embroiled in a legal battle as a result of her tweets related to Covid. The legal fees have amounted to a staggering CAD 300,000 (Rs 1,83,75,078), leaving her in a precarious financial situation. Fortunately, X has stepped forward and pledged to cover her expenses, providing her with much-needed support.
In a statement, X stated, "Dr. Gill faced harassment from mainstream media and censorship from previous Twitter management due to her public opposition on Twitter (now X) against the Covid lockdown efforts and vaccination mandates imposed by the Canadian and Ontario governments. Additionally, she was subjected to investigations and disciplinary proceedings by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, resulting in the placement of "cautions" on her permanent public record." As a result of the ongoing legal proceedings, Dr. Gill has depleted her life savings, leaving her burdened with a significant amount of debt. Despite facing these challenges, the Indian-origin doctor remains a vocal critic of vaccinations. She firmly believes that if one has not yet realized that a vaccine is unnecessary, they are simply not paying enough attention.
The medical community and mainstream media heavily condemned her online posts. Dr. Gill initiated a lawsuit against 23 doctors, journalists, and news organizations, alleging their involvement in a character assassination campaign. However, the judge dismissed the lawsuit under the anti-SLAPP law, which protects public participation, stating that Dr. Gill's objective was to suppress her critics' freedom of speech on a public platform. As a result, Dr. Gill was ordered to reimburse the defendants for their legal fees.
