In a tragic event, an earthquake hit northwest China, causing the collapse of buildings and resulting in the deaths of at least 111 people. The strong and shallow tremor primarily affected Gansu province, where approximately 100 people were killed and many more injured. The nearby province of Qinghai also experienced casualties, with 11 reported deaths and 100 injuries in the city of Haidong.

The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 5.9 according to the US Geological Survey, struck near the border of Gansu and Qinghai. The epicenter was approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province. Several aftershocks followed the initial earthquake, causing further distress.

President Xi Jinping has called for urgent rescue efforts and relief work to ensure the safety of survivors and their property. Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with emergency vehicles and workers rushing to the affected areas. The severely damaged buildings and collapsed houses have made the rescue work challenging.

The earthquake's impact was felt in Xi'an, a city located 570 kilometers away, highlighting the significant reach of the tremor. Local villages have suffered disruptions in power and water supplies, adding to the difficulties faced by the affected communities.

Complicating the rescue efforts, the region is currently experiencing extremely low temperatures, well below freezing. Emergency services have set up tents while residents seek warmth by fires. Videos and images posted on social media reveal the devastation caused by fallen ceilings and debris.

The USGS initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 6.0 but later revised it to 5.9. Despite the downward revision, the destructive impact remains evident. The situation is unfolding rapidly, and authorities are working diligently to provide aid and support to the affected regions.
