Following the media reports about the possible attacks by the Islamic State, the US embassy in New Delhi issued a travel warning to its citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance at tourist places, which are famous among Westerners in India.

The alert titled 'security message for US citizens', says, "The US Embassy warns of an increased threat to places in India frequented by Westerners, such as markets,religious sites, and festival venues. All US citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness as detailed in the State Department’s Worldwide Caution of September 9, 2016."

The US State Department also tweeted this statement with the message, “US Embassy New Delhi warns of an increased threat to places in India frequented by Westerners, such as religious sites, markets.”

The department caution issued on September 9, 2016 regarding India specifically, says: "India continues to experience terrorist and insurgent activities which may affect the citizens of the United States directly or indirectly. Anti-western terrorist groups active in India include Islamist extremist groups such as Harakat ul-Mujahidin, Harkat-ul-Jihad-i-Islami, Indian Mujahideen,  Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed."
