UK teenager Scarlett Keeling case: Goa court acquits two accused

Over eight and a half year after 15-year-old British teenager Scarlett Keeling's body was found on Goa's Anjuna beach, two accused charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, acquitted by the Children’s court, due to lack of evidence.

The Judge Vandana Tendulkar said that both the accused beach shack workers Samson D'souza and Placido Carvalho are acquitted. They had been accused of sexually assaulting Scarlett after giving her a cocktail of drugs and leaving her unconscious in the shallow waters. Her body was found in the early hours of February 19, 2008.

Scarlett's mother, Fiona MacKeown, who came to Goa hoping her daughter would finally get justice, said that, "I am devastated. The Indian judicial system has totally let me down." "My daughter was murdered. Someone should be held responsible."

Before the verdict, Ms MacKeown had told reporters, that, "It has been long time of waiting. Waiting for this day. I am nervous and hope that the struggle and wait will end."

The BBC news reported, Scarlett's mother said that, "I know she's not still here, but it feels like a part of her is."

"She hassled me stupid.  She was really unhappy, a big sulky teenager making my life really hard."

"My last memory of her is her squealing and jumping up and down, hugging me and saying, 'Thanks mum, I love you,'" she said.

"I am going to regret letting her go for the rest of my life," she said.

"If I could turn back the clock, of course I would change what I did.”But who wouldn't say that?"

"I am quite free with my children. I don't believe in completely controlling them. I believe I am here to support them as they grow up and to help them. And I think everyone is entitled to their own beliefs about bringing up their children," she said.
