In a largely conservative-Indonesia, sexual liberation of girls is still unthinkable. To repress young girls from engaging in extracurricular sex and protect against prostitution, Sumatra education board head recommended that all girls undertake virginity tests before being admitted to the high school.

H.M. Rasyid, the education office head in South Sumatra’s Prabumulih district, suggested that the senior high school girls be “tested” before admission and has proposed a budget for it. He believe ‘‘every woman has the right to virginity’’, and that ‘‘we expect students not to commit negative acts.’’

The test is meant only for female students, aged between 15 to16 and entering the post-compulsory phase of education. As per the recommendation, a test would be conducted to check if their hymen are intact. Boys, on the other hand, won't have to undergo any such “virginity” tests.

Lambasting his proposal as “excessive and unethical”, other officials and activists booed down his plans, citing it as discriminatory and violation of human rights.

People took to social media sites  like Facebook and Twitter  to slam the outrageous proposal, with some labeling the tests as a form of child abuse that could emotionally scar the students for good.

Provincial education chief Widodo assured that he would convince Rasyid to drop the plan. "There are many more important and useful things that need to be cared for rather than a test. As students, they need to be nurtured,” he said.

In the capital Jakarta, Aris Merdeka Sirait of the National Commission for Child Protection, said the plan was "just aimed for popularity". "Virginity loss is not due to sexual activities. It could be by sports or health problems," he said. "We strongly oppose this excessive move."
