Narendra Modi has proved that controversies aren't bigger than one's deeds and ambitions.
Despite facing a flak from the detractors for not doing enough to thwart the 2002 Godhra riots that killed nearly 2,000, Modi's eminence has been on rise. The 62-year-old has been heaped praises for turning the fortunes of Gujarat as one of the most affluent and best-governed states in the country. Not just that, the poster boy of Hindutva is now being hailed as the “man” for India!
The big question, however, is - can Modi turn the fortunes of the saffron party too?
Narendra Modi, the three times chief minister of Gujarat is deemed as a clean, able, no-nonsense administrator who has build a rep as an upright and competent technocrat. Not only has he electrified 18,000 villages in Gujarat and boosted Gujarat's economy by 10%, but also barred red tape companies, giving boost to Ford, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.
On the flipside, the stigma attached to Godhra riots and Modi continues. Despite his aaccomplishments, he is still gazed through the prism of the 2002 riots. Also, opinion polls predict that even if the BJP secures maximum votes, it will face problems finding partners to form a coalition government with Modi as its head. Also, political observers opine that Modi can be rejected by Muslims and moderate Hindus.
Ahead of the upcoming elections, will Modi manage to shun his detractors and walk away with the top post. Well that's only for time to tell!
