To quench the drought situation in Palakkad district in Kerala, the meeting of the Joint Water Regulatory Board of inter-state Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) with senior officers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu held at Wagamon on Friday has decided to release 100 cubic feet per second water.
According to the PAP agreement, Kerala should get 7.25 TMC feet water every year for Chitturpuzha irrigation scheme. Till now, TN had released 7.07 TMC water for Kerala from PAP. Till June, the remaining will be released.
The Joint Water Regulatory Board meeting was attended by Chief Engineer of Kerala Water Resources Department P. Lathika, Chief Engineer of Kerala State Electricity Board Viswanathan Nair and Chief Engineer of Tamil Nadu Water Resources Organisation K. Raghunathan and Chief Engineer of Tamil Nadu Electricty Board Pannerselvam.
The Kerala officials in the Regulatory Board informed their Tamil Nadu counterparts about the drying up of Bharathapuzha in the severe summer affecting drinking water supply. The Tamil Nadu officials have agreed to release 100 cubic feet per second water immediately.
Kerala had claimed 2.5 TMC as its share from the excess yield of Parambikulam group of reservoirs under the PAP system.
The additional water released by Tamil Nadu will be adjusted in this share of excess water, the Kerala officials said.
They said that as per PAP agreement no water is released from April 1 to May 15. Considering the drought as a special case, Tamil Nadu is releasing water. (msn)
