Few months before the Assembly elections scheduled for 2014 Godavari water is expected to come to city. This project was expected to be finished by December 2013 by the water resource board. But as per the source the projet would be started and the supply to the citizens would be two or three months before the elections in 2014.
Phase-I of the Godavari project, costing Rs 3,800 crore, will bring 172 million gallons of water per day to the city. It will service the surrounding municipal areas of Sainikpuri, Cantonment, Kapra, Alwal, Malkajgiri, Qutbullapur, Kukatpally, Rajendernagar and Serilingampally.
The current demand for water supply in the city is 460 MGD, but the Water Board is supplying only 340 MGD, a major shortfall, that deprives the surrounding municipal areas, many of which get water once in three days, some only once in seven days.
With the Godavari’s inflow, the total supply will cross over 500 MGD. Phase-I of Godavari and Phase-III of Krishna have been planned envisaging the water requirements of the city and its surroundings up to 2017.
