Sangareddy town in Medak district continued to be tense today after two religious groups fought pitched battles last night leading to the clamping of curfew.
Reports said a local person uploaded the pictures of a shrine on Facebook angering the other religious group. Hundreds of people from both sides gathered on the streets moving menacingly and fighting pitched battles with stones and lathis during the dead of the night. Frenzied mobs also threw stones on vehicles and set four vehicles on fire.
Senior police officials immediately rushed to the spot and clamped curfew to bring the situation under control.
Hundreds of people collected today also at several points in the town forcing police to lathi charge them. Police used tear gas as a last resort to disperse the mobs.
With the CM ordering a inquiry into the incidents and seeking a report, senior police and revenue officials are camping in the town since this morning. (J)
