Samsung on Friday unveiled its first augmented reality (XR) headset, codenamed “Project Moohan.” When Google unveiled its new Android XR operating system, designed for mixed reality headsets and augmented reality (AR) glasses, it was seen in a demo. Samsung's Moohan XR headset supports Google's Gemini AI assistant and has apps optimized to run on a large virtual display. It will be released next year as a competitor to Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3. The new headset, called Moohan (infinite in Korean), runs on Android XR, Google's new platform that supports features such as AR, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). Google says the first devices with Android XR will launch next year, but neither company has announced a timeline or pricing.

The South Korean tech giant says the Moohan XR headset features an advanced display and offers pass-through capability and multi-mode input support. Its nearest competitor, the Apple Vision Pro, has a micro-OLED display with a resolution of 3660 x 3200 pixels per eye. Not much is known about pricing or availability of the Moohan XR headset, but the presence of Android XR confirms that the headset will support the new features that Google unveiled when announcing its new operating system. This includes features like using Circle to search with gestures, viewing videos and photos on a virtual display with Google TV and Google Photos, and browsing the web with Google Chrome. It also supports features such as live translation of the displayed text from the user's perspective and the ability to display immersive views from different locations using Google Maps.

Samsung first announced the arrival of the XR headset at its first Galaxy Unpacked 2023, where it unveiled the Galaxy S23 series of smartphones. At the time, the company announced that it was working with Google and Qualcomm to develop its first XR headset. Google announced Thursday that it had developed Android XR with Qualcomm and Samsung, but said it was working with other companies, including Magic Leap, on future XR products with artificial intelligence and AR technology.
