Top seeds women's doubles, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis has defeated the fourth seeded Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 to claim the US Open title. Indo-Swiss pair has taken only 69 minutes to conquer the Australian-Kazakh pair at the Arthur Ashe stadium.
Sania-Martina duos remained undeterred to bring about the third and fourth successive service breaks to extend their advantage to 5-2. Sania served out the first set at 6-3 in 31 minutes. They hit 16 winners, four more than their opponents, to claim the first set, converting three of the eight break points. Dellacqua-Shvedova were able break their opponents only once.
President Pranab Mukherjee has congratulated the Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis on winning the US Open women's doubles title in New York. "Hearty congratulations @MirzaSania @mhingis on winning the U.S. Open women's doubles, well done!" the President tweeted.
By pairing up with her Swiss partner Martina Hingis, Sania has reached the top of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career. For the first time Sania has won two back-to-back majors in a year, Wimbledon and US Open. Hingis was her partner on both occasions. By winning Wimbledon, she has became the first Indian woman to win a championship at the All England Club. This year Sania was awarded the country's highest sporting honour, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
