Ghanchakkar Hindi Movie Review and Rating

After bagging critical acclaims for his previous “hard-hitting” offerings like Aamir and No One Killed Jessica, director Raj Kumar Gupta is back — this time with a new age comic thriller starring Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi. And to be fair, the director has done a commendable job of making a thriller comedy that does more than just tickle your ribs or gut. Loaded with laughs and wit, not to forget stellar performances by the poker-faced Emraan Hashmi and loud-mouthed Vidya Balan, this nail-biting madcap whirligig is an audacious attempt by Raj Kumar Gupta to steer clear of the Bollywood slapstick stereotypes — no tomfoolery, no overblown characters (save for one), no farce. There are instances when the situations appear far too labored, unsubstantial and weak. But all in all, this is a potboiler that is crazy, quirky and replete with interesting twists and turns.

Story :

It all starts with a bank heist — three men rob a bank and agree to meet after three months to share the booty. In the course of time, the master planner who hatches the entire heist goes into amnesia, fails to acknowledge his accomplices and even remember the place where he has hidden the moolah, and from thereon begins all chaos, confusion, comedy and thrill.

Sanjay Athray (Emraan) is a suave, sly safecracker who wants to give up on crime, but not before pulling off one last heist. He gangs up with two other crooks and brainstorms a bank theft. Together, they pilfer Rs. 35 crores. To avoid getting caught, the partners let the money stay with Sanjay until matters cool down and agree to meet after three months to divide the loot. But when they come knocking at his door, Sanjay fails to recognize them. Has Sanjay really lost his memory or is he trying to con his mates?

Meanwhile, Neetu Athray (Vidya), his kinky, loony housewife, makes thing tough for all three, as they try to revive Sanjay's failing memory and discover the loot.

Analysis :

Ghanchakkar-review

This is one film that will keep you guessing until the end. Keep an eye on the repetitive elements or you will miss both the fun and the thrill. The screenplay could have been more airtight, but is nevertheless quirky and fun. Amit Trivedi’s background score and tracks fails to make any big impression, but needless to say, sounds amusing to the ears. It's the neat editing that keeps the film crisp and flowy and makes the two-hours, if not highly fun, somewhat interesting.

Performance :

Emraan Hashmi, as the retired cat burglar and couch potato, who loves watching TV more than spending time with his wife, is just perfect. His garrulous better half, a blatantly loud-mouthed Vidya Balan outshines in her role. Her performance is just impossible to miss!

Namit Das and Rajesh Sharma, who play the roles of Emraan's accomplice in the movie bring in just the right blend of notoriety and fun. Thanks to their impeccable comic timing, the film benefits mainly from their substantial performances!

Final Word:Raj Kumar Gupta's witty thriller is not flawless, but is nevertheless both challenging and intriguing. This is one film that certainly tickles your gray matter, never mind if it fails to make you guffaw. The film could definitely have been better and he script more engaging, but it still manages to woo, surprise, shock and entertain its audience at every turn.

Ghanchakkar releases today, that's 28th June 2013.
