What to wear to a spring party

When you're looking for a new spring outfit, start with the perfect dress and then build around it. We love the retro look of this pretty one-shoulder frock in fun stripes.

Go retro

Grab a dress from decades gone by. Vintage-inspired dresses from the 1950s are all the rage right now, thanks to TV shows like Mad Men and Pan Am. Prints are in, but they don't have to be florals this spring. We love the look of the Stripe It or Not Dress from ModCloth. This box pleated dress features a flirty one-shoulder design and a sweet selection of stripes in onyx, fuchsia, white and taupe.

Patent sandals

Add a pair of glossy patent leather shoes in black or fuchsia to set off the dress. For an outdoor spring party, pick a pair like the Franco Sarto Crave black patent sandals ($79). These cork platform wedges are trendy, chic and comfortable.

If you want something a little dressier, splurge on these Jimmy Choo India patent crisscross halter sandals. They are bold yet sophisticated. Just don't wear them to a garden party though - you'll sink right into the ground with the skinny heel.

Bright clutch

Bold shades of tangerine, bright pink and lemon yellow are hot for springtime. Pick up this Clare Vivier foldover clutch in hot pink with orange trim. This roomy leather clutch is the perfect size. At 11 inches wide and with a flat design, it's small enough that it doesn't look bulky but big enough to carry all your essentials. It also comes in aqua blue or gray, both with a touch of neon yellow trim.

Hot headband

Headbands, hair clips, barrettes and other hair accessories are essential for spring. They add a sweet yet flirty accent to your look. You can add a little glitz with this Jane Tran black beaded embroidered headband, work with the stripes in your dress with this Jennifer Behr crossgrain ribbon headband or think pink with this ASOS neon lace headband.

Simple jewelry

Don't overaccessorize this season. Instead pick one piece of jewelry that you love and wear it often. Also, don't be matchy-matchy with the pink hues in the various components of your outfit. Instead, pick varying shades of pink that are slightly different from one another.
