In the Indian culture father plays the guidance role and the mother plays the compassionate role. This incident in Mysore only speaks of excesses. The father wanted to see the better of his daughter, this is quite natural. But in this extreme case he forced his daughter to beg for alms near a temple, for her to understand the hardships of life. Though it is for the betterment of the child, the method adopted is condemnable. But there are more hardships that children face, that are going unnoticed. On a pursuit for discipline, we sometimes forget the limitations. This case would be a yardstick for all such fathers.

The incident as narrated, Prakash, a lab technician forced his 12-year old daughter to beg at a temple, on Monday. The girl was punished as she did not secure good results in the exams. The pity state of the girl was noticed by a social activist, who took her home.

Prakash was arrested and a case under the Juvenile Justice Act was registered against him. "My intention was to teach her the hardships of life," he reportedly told the police. Prakash has been granted bail. The girl is now in the custody of Child Welfare Committee which has kept her in a juvenile home until she recovers from her trauma. (With inputs from internet- AarKay)
