The researchers warned of a new Solar Storm coming and the internet is under threat again. Internet happens to be the backbone for mankind and is used for governance, manufacturing, banking, medicine, education and other fields. The new and massive solar storm will damage the infrastructure and will lead to the internet apocalypse. The research paper is published by Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi of the University of California, Irvine and VMware Research, a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the earth is in the direct path of the solar system, all the charged and magnetized solar particles interact with the magnetic field of the earth and will indulge in damage. They are said to be damaging the long-distance cables which are known to be the backbone of the internet.
Several internet providers are now using fiber optic cables that are immune to the solar storms. Coaxial cables are used in the past and they carry light instead of electric current. The researchers also said that the submarine cables too will be impacted because of the solar storm because of their larger lengths. The research was based on topology and it was revealed that Google data centers have better resilience than that of the Facebook. There are also several predictions made about the internet disruption based on the countries and their connectivity. The researchers also revealed that the communication satellites too will be impacted by the solar system. Several electronic components of the satellites are expected to be damaged which are in the low earth orbit systems.
Most of the repeaters will fail and the network goes online in those countries and the report said that it is difficult to predict the exact damage that would be caused. It all depends on the size of the massive solar storm.
