Story
Laila (Kalki Koechlin), a student of Delhi University, writes lyrics for the college band and is the cynosure of all eyes. Her character was very different as she portrayed cerebral palsy role, a talented rebel on a wheelchair and woman fond of porn stuff.
Her mother Revathy notices the changed attitude of Laila and scolds her, but the specially-abled Laila argues for privacy and needs. She gets a full scholarship from New York University and leaves for US, where she enjoys as such she wanted with gadgets, weather and movies of her interest.
She shows interest in British boy Jared (William Moseley), later meets Khanum (Sayani Gupta), a half-Bangladeshi, half-Pakistani girl.
Both the girls get new range of relationship apart from friendship and goes for lesbian activities where the duo enjoys at a greater level. And the remaining consequences and behavior of Laila should be seen on screens only..
Analysis :
Director Shonali Bose's intent and actor Kalki Koechlin's talent are the highlights of the movie. We must appreciate Bose’s choice for the role, which cannot be performed by any other girl.
So far Kalki was seen in nuancing characters with city and posh background in her past projects. Revathi was brilliantly fixed in her role as a mother of special girl child.
The picturisation in New York City added the great mileage to the movie. Margarita, With A Straw isn’t just about disability and homosexuality, but brilliantly covers the questions of identity and personal choice, and above all of humanity.
Performance :
Without any doubt, we can praise Kalki Koechlin, Revathy and other characters who were taken the film as special. Laila-Khanum relationship where they go for homo-love in multiple times was good to see.
Initially Laila maintains the character of impaired motor skills excellently with perfection, but we can observe the improvement in her motor skills and way she moves after having love with Khanum. It seems the love has worked a lot on her physical strength too.
Final Word:
Kalki Koechlin's talent makes us comfort, we can go and watch once..
